About
the Orchestra
The RTWSO was founded in 1922 when a group of 21 amateur string
players, supported by a flautist and a pianist, gave a concert in King
Charles Hall, Royal Tunbridge Wells. The orchestra is now a full
symphony orchestra that has established a regular pattern of six
concerts each season.
Today, the RTWSO is made up from a core group of gifted, local
musicians, whose ranks are augmented by a larger number of professional
musicians. They perform to a high standard and offer continuity for our
audiences, as many of the players have been performing with the RTWSO
for some years.
Time and time again, the RTWSO turns in memorable performances
completely worthy of other leading orchestras. We promote a
fascinating series of concerts to enjoy, exploring familiar and some
less familiar orchestral works in a dazzling mix of programmes.

A
Good Reputation
The RTWSO enjoys a good reputation, which enables us to attract some
internationally famous artists and orchestral musicians.
In the 2009/10 season we will be performing with the following:
- Nicola Benedetti violin
- Robert Plane clarinet
- Jack Gibbons piano
- Peter
Moore trombone
- Yevgeny
Sudbin piano
- Guy
Johnston cello
The
RTWSO has a regular team of professional conductors including
Christopher Adey, Roderick Dunk and Neil Thomson, who
contribute control, energy and fresh music interpretations for all
RTWSO concerts.
Cynthia Fleming (violin)
is the RTWSO's leader, as well as being
leader of the
BBC Concert Orchestra.
Cynthia was born in Odessa,
Texas, of musical parents, and started violin lessons at the age
of 5. She
gained a four year scholarship to Trinity College of Music
in London
at the age of 18. In 1982 she joined the BBC Concert
Orchestra at
the back of the second violins, was moved to the firsts a week later
and
promoted to no 4 in 1985. She was then appointed Associate Leader
in
1989. Cynthia was appointed Leader of the Concert
Orchestra in 2004 and still loves the unique mix of music that the
Concert
Orchestra plays after 25 years with the organization.
Cynthia also does extensive freelance session work,
and has acted as guest leader for, among others,
the BBC
National Orchestra of Wales, the National SO and the Hallé Orchestra.
